Why I Blog.

by k3vin on May.27, 2008, under Random

This question was asked over at Friendly Atheist: “Why do you blog?” I will quickly answer that.

As an atheist, I blog for several reasons. I like to rant. I think a lot of people fancy an old fasioned rant but no one is around long enough to listen! That’s a problem. I want to rant and put it on the internet for anyone to see at any time. I don’t think it matters that anyone is reading the rantness because the availibility for anyone to read it is there.

I also think that atheism is a voice that hasn’t been seriously heard. I think that thousands of years of religious slander has turned everyone off toward atheists, which is to be expected. However, I think it is about time that people understand what my viewpoint is, not only about religious issues but on everything that religions claim to dominate over. For example, morality, happiness, ethics, explinations of the ‘difficult questions’ and more are issues that I want to speak to.

Blogging is pleasing to do. I like to write. I may not be the most insightful person or the most articulate in my wording but there’s something about typing an entry, hitting publish, and seeing your entry appear online.

My general goal as an atheist isn’t to destroy all of religion. On the contrary, I just want everyone to hear my (and others like mine’s) voice. It’s that simple. I had a conversation with a friend who happened to be an evangelical christian girl. I discussed what atheism really was, the difference between agnosticism and atheism, and explained some of my reasoning for rejecting Christianity and she had no reply. When I said that she was an evangelical Christian I mean she was boasting about converting several atheists. After having the conversation I am baffled at how she did that. She didn’t even know what an atheist was. Jesus Christ! Remember what I said about ranting? There you go.

Im sorry to hear that you are an atheist, but i have enjoyed reading the few blog posts that you have. I know that you said that you didnt care if anyone has read your post, but due to the lack of responses from what i can see on my end..i dont see a whole lot of your atheist friends coming to your side.

I’m not sorry that I’m an atheist. I’m not sorry you’re whatever you are. I’m going to presume Christian. I am sorry, however, that you’re sorry for people who have differing viewpoints that you because of that viewpoint. When you adopt that kind of mindset it’s easy to completely ignore anyone else’s position and motivation. And that usually doesn’t promote good and meaningful discussion.

k3vin bud, I just found your site today (thanks to the top 10 signs on reddit) and have pretty much been sitting here reading it all day (im sick so its been fantastic to just sit here and read decent intellectual debates)

I share the same mindset as you. I have been sitting in the backseat for too long accepting that others should believe in whatever they want - until recently.

It’s when you realise that religion is just not about belief in a god who is loving and wants everyone to do good but more about the fact that it prevents progress as humans! We have evolved into intelligent beings and religion is causing us to put that behind us start on a path of de-evolution. It’s frustrating!

I’ve bookmarked your site now and will def be reading more! (I really enjoyed your debate with Derrik on the top 10 signs post)

Hey bryan. Thanks for the interest. Making a blog is essentially free now so if you have anything that you want to say then I suggest putting something out. Even if it is read by a very small amount of people it can be a resource for you in the future and a way to gather thoughts, arguments and links that you like. If you do decide to do something like a blog or get involved in anything at all I’m interested to see!

Personally, I suggest wordpress.com for starting out.

And yeah, that debate went on for a long time. Before I realized it we’ve had over 50 responses. I didn’t really consider it a debate but rather a discussion…
